My Contribution- Set Design & Camera | Sound Design | Creating Action Zones
360° Snapshots
1.1. Ideation
Story & Screenplay : The process typically begins with conceptualising a narrative that leverages VR's capabilities to engage the audience within the story world. We focused on creating environments and characters that resonate emotionally and exploit the potential for immersion. Crafting audio and visual cues specific to hospital ward rooms was essential to make the experience realistic
Visualising : Many locations were explored and based off of them, some visual elements were decided. Things like point of view and position were also kept in mind.
1.2. Narrative Structure
Space - Zones of Action : To better understand the story in a spatial sense, a top view of the scenes depicting the story world was created. It was helpful in planning the plot-points in a spatial manner (see images below).
1.3. Equipment Selection
Camera & Audio Equipment : X3 Insta360, Mobile Dolby Audio Recorder
1.4. Planning the Production
Casting & Location Search : Primary Healthcare Centre, IITJ was the location that was selected within campus with due permission. The cast was selected keeping in mind the roles in the story
Set & Lighting Design : The set was meticulously designed to recreate a realistic setting of the hospital ward room, with the necessary equipment.
2.1. Camera Setup
The Camera was set up from the field of view of the patient in the bed. Consequently, the field of view was restricted, as it would be realistically. Instead of placing an actual actor, pillows were used inside the sheets to simulate the presence of the patient, which enabled the camera to have proper room to be placed.
2.2. Monitoring the Performance
Since there is technically no affordance of “Behind the Camera”, we strategically placed one of the crew members behind the hospital bed, where they could monitor the performance well and also give cues to the actors.
2.3. Reference Images
Removing Equipment & Crew : Clone stamp was used during post-processing to remove the camera setup and other errors in the footage.
2.4. Sound Recording
On-Set & Studio : For the recording of primary dialogues, Dolby Audio on mobile phones was recorded while shooting simultaneously. Additional dialogues and sounds were later recorded or added in the studio and combined in post-production.
Editing
Equirectangular Videos : The equirectangular video captured in insta360 X3 was then imported in premiere pro and aftereffects for post-processing.
Spatial Audio : The sounds were edited using Reaper software to enable interactive head-tracked spatial sound. The entire audio content was then converted to a first-order ambisonic format to accompany the 360° video.
Channels of Diffusion
The VR film has been made available on YouTube 360 open platform.
Mode of Experience
For the screening, people from IITJ Campus were invited. The film was presented on Meta Quest 3. It is best experienced lying down on an angle in a VR Headset.
